City Council Approves Cemetery Expansion Permit

On July 20, the Anacortes City Council approved conditions for the expansion of Grand View Cemetery.  The City has owned and operated the cemetery since 1946.  Land to the west of the existing cemetery is city owned and has been slated for expansion since 2006.

With just over 200 burial sites remaining for sale at the cemetery, the expansion will add up to 2000 new grave plots.  The first phase of the plan will be to remove brush, clear trees and excavate damaged asphalt on the exit road on the west side of the cemetery.  After the site is regraded, plots will be surveyed and irrigation and landscaping with over 150 new trees will be planted.

It is unfortunate that the large row of poplar trees along the west side of the cemetery will need to be removed, but the work on a road and preparation for new burial plots makes removal a necessity.  Work is scheduled to begin this fall on the first phases of the project.
