Kiwanis Club sells Mt. Erie for $1 (1951)
Thursday, September 30, 2021
For the low price of $1, Anacortes acquired Mt. Erie from the Anacortes Kiwanis Club with the agreement that the property would be used for park purposes. A decade later the city contracted with PSE to build communications towers at the top in exchange for an annual fee, but the club’s feathers really got ruffled in the 1990s when PSE contracted with cell phone companies for additional antennas. A memorandum of understanding was negotiated, giving Kiwanis a third of the fees generated, which are passed on to the Parks Foundation. More than $300,000 has been raised for parks and recreation since that time.
