Samish legend tells of the maiden Ko-kwai-awoot, a beautiful woman of whom a man from beneath the sea fell in love with. The man asked her father for her hand in marriage, however he refused out of fear of her drowning. The man told the father that if he didn't have her the food of the sea would disappear. Faced with this reality, the maiden and her father accepted and she went to live with her new husband in the depths of the ocean. Since then, food has been plentiful. Carved with passion by Anacortes based artist Tracy Powell, the maiden stands as a symbol of Native pride.
