What is the Accessible Community Advisory Committee’s (ACAC) purpose?

The Accessible Communities Advisory Committee looks to engage the community of people with disabilities, local government, businesses and organizations in effective, solutions-oriented partnerships to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities through elimination or mitigation of barriers they face.

Why form an ACAC?

When people who have disabilities are welcomed and included as members of our communities, their participation contributes to the economy. Public policy makers need the knowledge and expertise of people with disabilities to ensure that their community becomes more accessible and accommodating.

What responsibilities will the ACAC have?

The ACAC will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

          • Advising policy makers on the needs of persons with disabilities in emergency plans.

          • Advising the county and other local governments within the county on access to programs, services, and activities,                 new construction or renovation projects, sidewalks, other pedestrian routes of travel, and disability parking enforcement.

          • Developing local initiatives and activities to promote greater awareness of disability issues, and acceptance,                           involvement and access for persons with disabilities within the community.

How do I get involved with the ACAC?

Everyone interested in accessibility for people with disabilities are invited to attend and participate in ACAC meetings (i.e. Stakeholders). A core group of individuals (i.e. Core Members) will be selected to represent specific areas (e.g. a type of disability), and be responsible to regularly attend committee meetings and complete assignments as they arise. Lastly, subject matter experts and those serving the people with disabilities community are sought as Consultants to the committee, providing guidance in areas of need. Core Members: Volunteers recruited to represent a diverse range of people with disabilities, will be responsible to attend ACAC meetings, provide insight into needs of people with disabilities and follow-up on committee assignments.

Stakeholders: Anyone interested in ACAC activities can join the ACAC Stakeholder email list, and will receive meeting agendas, minutes and other ACAC communications. Stakeholders and the public are welcome to attend ACAC meetings and join in discussions.

Consultants: Recruited to provide expert advice and guidance regarding issues affecting people with disabilities, consultants might also seek guidance from ACAC members. Consultants will receive meeting minutes and committee communications to stay current with commit issues, attending meetings or providing input as needed.
