October 2019 Update

The library is pleased to announce that we have received construction documents and a building permit for the three related projects: Children’s Area, including the Children’s Gateway, and the Teen Room/Meeting Room.

We met with the City’s Public Works Facilities Manager to evaluate the scope and implementation challenges for each of the three areas of the project. The scope for the individual areas are still being reviewed. Once completed, the Facilities Manager and the Library Director will identify a timeline that works well with the library operations that has minimal impact to public use of the facility. The Teen Project is presenting as the best option to begin the space reconfiguration. We will need to present the projects in the public procurement bid process. We hope that we can begin next steps sometime in the next 2 months.

Space Planning for the Anacortes Public Library

One of the four primary goals of Anacortes Public Library's 2016-2020 Strategic Plan focuses on Space Planning and Utilization in an effort to redesign library space in order to promote collaboration and be responsive to user priorities and citizen interests. With input and feedback from library users, library staff, community surveys, focus groups involving library users, non-users, and key stakeholders, four Space Planning and Utilization objects emerged from the process:

  • Evaluate current library space for redesign options to maximize more diverse and targeted use.
  • Wisely use remaining existing capital funds to re-envision/modernize the Library.
  • Involve the staff, board, and community in future space planning.
  • Plan for a future makerspace/computer lab and/or flexible meeting space.

With the help of Underwood and Associates and continued public feedback, Anacortes Public Library is turning its focus on Space Planning and Utilization in 2019.  Some exciting changes have already begun, with the library's new centralized Service Desk, and new automated Self-Checks on the way in early January 2019 to align with current service standards. We are reaching out again and looking for your input by holding four Charrettes, or library stakeholders meetings, focused on four project ideas synthesized from input from the strategic plan.  Please click on the document links below for further details regarding the four projects, and the library's strategic.
