The seven member Commission serves as an advisory board to the Mayor and the City Council, with its primary responsibilities being to prepare the comprehensive land use plan and shoreline management master plan.  Planning Commissioners are appointed to six year terms by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council.

The Planning  Commission conducts hearings and makes recommendations on various land use permit applications, reviews all proposed amendments to the comprehensive plan, city zoning code, subdivision code and shoreline master plan, and may perform such other duties or responsibilities as specifically delegated by the Mayor or City Council.
