Department of Ecology Award
The Anacortes Wastewater Treatment Plant was presented with an “Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Plant” award by the Department of Ecology at 7:30 p.m. on June 17 in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Amy Jankowiak, Municipal Enforcement Specialist, and Kevin Fitzpatrick, Northwest Regional Office Water Quality Manager, presented the award to Plant Manager, John Franz.

The award is given to those who achieve 100 percent compliance with the regulations imposed by the discharge permit. The permit places limits on the quantity and concentrations of contaminants that treatment plants discharge. Out of 300 wastewater treatment plants in Washington, Anacortes is one of 26 who were given this recognition.

This is the fourth time since it opened in February of 1992 that the plant has not violated the permit regulations. Franz accepted the award from the D.O.E. in 1996, 1997 and 2001 as well.
