  OPERATIONS MISSION STATEMENT

We work for the public to provide high quality water, street, storm, sewer and solid waste services with integrity in a manner that is responsive to public concerns, friendly, dependable, cost effective, timely and consistent; and is protective of our resources, environment, and infrastructures, beyond customer expectations.

EQUIPMENT SERVICES, A DIVISION OF OPERATIONS
Keeps City Motors Running

Will Ludemann, Fleet Services Manager

Equipment Services is responsible for writing bid specifications, purchasing City vehicles and equipment, and providing maintenance of the City’s fleet.

The service shop performs about 400 services per year (lube, oil and filter) as well as other maintenance and repairs. It is a very diverse fleet, including everything from weed eaters to the City’s aerial ladder fire truck. We try to do as much in-house work as we can and send out only the jobs that we’re not equipped to do. We outfit all of our own police vehicles, which includes installed light bars, wiring in controls for electrical accessories, installing consoles, siren, partitions and safety seats.

The City’s fleet has grown quite a bit in the past 20 years. In 1984 there were approximately 100 pieces of equipment. Today that number is in excess of 300.

We consume about 1200 gallons of lube and hydraulic oil per year and about 6,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel per month. Five years ago we installed a waste oil furnace, which eliminated our disposal cost, as well as cutting our natural gas bill by 25 percent. The equipment shop considers itself to be a support service for all other departments in the City, helping out where they can. They do a considerable amount of welding and fabrication such as building storm water grates, post pockets for the Park Department, kiosks, building gates for the street department or whatever special project might come up. They also work closely with the City’s communications contractor, installing and maintaining the City’s mobile and base radio system, as well as our automated gate and security system.
