Anacortes Police - Citizens Academy
In 2003 the Anacortes Police Department sponsored its first Citizens Academy. The Academy is designed to educate citizens about the workings of the Police Department and to develop a positive relationship with the community we serve by providing a thorough understanding of:
  • The various functions of this Police
  • Department in the community.
  • The Anacortes Police Department policing philosophy.
  • Some of the community challenges facing police.
  • What it is like to be an Anacortes Police Officer.
  • The inherent dangers and stress in law enforcement.

The Academy is an opportunity for citizens to be exposed to what is behind the visible police action they see. It provides an interactive forum for both the police and citizens to share information and provides a greater understanding of police practices. This allows citizens to form objective opinions regarding police actions and to address community concerns regarding these actions.

The Academy is a twelve-week program, meeting once a week at the Police Department for 2.5-3 hours. Lessons include presentations from all specialty areas of the department, the court system, tours of the jail and dispatch center and a day of mock-scenes where students get an opportunity to experience the situational decision making process that police officers face.

We are now accepting applications for the 2006 Citizens Academy. Please contact Officer Del Farrell at 293-4684 for applications or for any further information.
