Public Education

The Anacortes Fire Department is eager to educate and provide information to our community about the department, our services and fire and safety issues.  Public Safety announcements are administered via local media.

The Department also provides the following programs:
Station Tours
The Fire Department welcomes many school and civic groups each year to tour our facilities.

Fire Stoppers
Fire Stoppers is a juvenile fire-setter intervention program managed and administered by Lieutenant John Bird. Please contact the department to arrange an appointment when you have a need for this program.

Bicycle Helmet Program
In an effort to reduce head injuries from bicycle accidents and skate boarding, we provide helmets, free of charge, to members of our community who do not have a helmet. This program is supported by local service groups and North Region EMS & Trauma. To obtain a free bicycle helmet, accompany your child to the Fire Department at 1016 13th Street. One of the Firefighter/Paramedic will properly fit your child with a helmet.

Ride-Alongs
The department also permits individuals to ride-along as citizen observers. Ride-along waiver forms are available at the Fire Department offices. Individuals must be over 18. To arrange for a ride-along, please contact the Fire Department office.

9-1-1 May Not Work for VoIP Phones
There are several service providers who now offer Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service to their customers. This service is attractive to people because they can now have voice service using their Internet Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection, and no longer need a dedicated telephone line to make phone calls. They are also provided with long distance service at no charge. Given the attractiveness of this service, people may not stop to think about drawbacks to the service, such as the fact that Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) may not work for VoIP phones.
